Astromental – Wotruba Church, Vienna

Music and sound direction by Martina Claussen, Isabella Forciniti, Gilbert Handler, Matthias Makowsky, Caroline Profanter, Günther Rabl, Christian Tschinkel

Projection SPACE CREATURES:

The projection consists of slow, moving creatures, lines, waves, tubes, stars and concrete blocks cut out of the walls of the Wotruba church, which become floating spaceship-like objects.

The grey colour of the concrete and the irregular block-like wall structure make it difficult to project there, so a language of form and colour had to be found that clearly sets the projection apart from the interior walls and at the same time homogeneously ‘captures’ and transforms the space.
The projection was created independently of the music, but with the knowledge that it should fill the church space to accompany the music and visually invite the viewer on an astromental journey through the most diverse spheres.

The hard concrete cubes become spaceships that interact with each other, weightless, permeable 2- or 3-dimensional structures that easily penetrate each other and transcend the laws of matter.
Quantum stars appear in the firmament, hoses snake along the horizon, lines become waves through sound and wrap around and deform the space until they become geometric reflections.
